What are PVC folding doors?

A PVC folding door is a door made of polyvinyl chloride panels that are hinged together and fold into a compact stack as the door opens. Most run on a top track, so there is little or nothing to trip over on the floor.

PVC is a plastic that does not rust, rot or swell with water, and it is easy to wipe clean. That is why PVC doors are so common in kitchens, bathrooms and utility areas, where timber doors swell and painted steel can rust. You can read more about the material itself on Wikipedia's polyvinyl chloride page.

The name covers two quite different products, so it helps to know which one you need before asking for a quote.

Types of PVC folding doors

PVC accordion (concertina) doors

Narrow PVC slats joined with flexible hinges that fold like an accordion. They are light and slim, hang from a top track, and are used to close off a kitchen, laundry, store or wardrobe, or to divide a room. They are internal doors only.

PVC panel folding doors

Wider flat PVC panels, often with a wood-effect or plain finish, that fold in pairs like a small bifold. They look more like a normal door and suit bathrooms, kitchens and room dividers.

uPVC bifold doors

Glazed doors made from rigid, unplasticised PVC (uPVC) profiles, usually with steel reinforcement inside. They look like an aluminium bifold but have thicker frames, and they can be used to a covered outdoor area.

If you are comparing folding styles, our guide to accordion doors vs bifold doors explains how concertina doors differ from bifolds in cost, looks and use.

Best rooms for a PVC folding door

They earn their place in the rooms that get wet, humid or heavily used, and in openings where a swinging door would get in the way.

  • Kitchens and pantries: close off an open kitchen or pantry and wipe away grease and splashes easily.
  • Laundry and utility rooms: steam and water do not damage PVC, and the door folds out of the way when you need access.
  • Bathrooms and toilets: a practical choice where a swing door would hit a basin or the WC. See also our bathroom doors.
  • Storerooms and wardrobes: a light door for a store, closet or walk-in wardrobe.
  • Room dividers: separate a living and dining area, or create a guest corner, without building a wall.
  • Maid's rooms and staff areas: a practical, easy-care door for secondary rooms in villas and apartments.

Advantages and limitations of PVC doors

PVC is a good material for the right place. Knowing the limits is what stops it being used in the wrong one.

Handles water

PVC does not swell, rot or rust, so it copes with steam, splashes and humidity in kitchens and bathrooms.

Easy to clean

A damp cloth and mild soap are enough. There is no paint or varnish to touch up.

Lighter on the budget

PVC doors usually cost less than aluminium or solid timber folding doors of the same size.

Saves space

The panels fold into a slim stack, so no floor area is lost to a door swing.

Limitations to know

  • Not a security door: accordion and panel PVC doors are internal doors. For an external door, choose aluminium or a reinforced uPVC system.
  • Less rigid than aluminium: PVC flexes more, so panels are narrower and frames thicker. Very wide or very tall openings are better in aluminium.
  • Sun and heat: PVC left in direct Dubai sun can fade or move with heat unless it is UV-stabilised. Light colours cope better than dark ones.
  • Sound: light PVC doors reduce noise and block the view, but they do not soundproof a room.
  • Feel: PVC looks and feels lighter than timber or aluminium, which matters more in a formal living room than in a laundry.

PVC vs aluminium folding doors

Both fold and save space. The right choice depends on where the door goes and what it has to keep out.

How PVC copes with Dubai heat and humidity

Dubai's heat, humidity and dust are the real test for any door. A few choices make PVC last.

Keep it out of full sun

Inside the home and in shaded areas, PVC performs well. For a door facing direct sun, ask for UV-stabilised uPVC or choose aluminium.

Pick lighter colours

White, cream and light wood effects absorb less heat than dark colours and keep their shape better.

Humidity is fine

Coastal humidity and bathroom steam are where PVC does better than timber, which can swell and stick.

Keep tracks clean

Dust in the track is the most common reason a folding door starts to drag. A quick vacuum keeps it running.

Buying checklist: choosing the right door

Check these points before you order, and you will get a door that fits the room and the way you use it.

  • Measure the opening: width and height at several points, because walls and floors in older buildings are rarely square. We measure at the site visit.
  • Stacking side: decide where the folded panels will sit so they do not block a switch, a cupboard or a walkway.
  • Track and floor: most of these doors hang from a top track. Check that the ceiling or lintel above can take the fixings.
  • Panel type: accordion slats for the slimmest stack, flat panels for a door-like look, or glazed uPVC for light.
  • Finish and colour: plain white, light colours or wood effects; choose to suit the room and the sun it gets.
  • Glazing or privacy: solid panels for bathrooms and stores; clear or frosted inserts where you want daylight.
  • Lock or latch: a simple latch for most rooms, a lockable handle for bathrooms and stores.
Tip: if the door separates an air-conditioned room from a hot area, ask about seals at the sides and top so cool air is not lost through the gaps.

What affects the cost of PVC folding doors in Dubai

PVC is usually one of the most affordable folding door options. The final price depends on the size and the specification, so every door is quoted after a free site visit. These are the main cost factors:

FactorWhy it matters
Width and heightA larger opening needs more panels and a longer track.
Door typeAccordion slats, flat panels and glazed uPVC bifolds are priced differently.
Finish and colourWood effects and special colours can cost more than plain white.
Glass insertsClear, frosted or decorative glass panels add to the price.
Locks and handlesLockable handles and upgraded hardware add a little to the cost.
Site conditionsUneven openings, weak lintels or ceiling work add labour.

Your written quote lists the door type, finish, hardware and installation, so you can compare it clearly. If you are also pricing aluminium, see our aluminium bifold door prices.

How we measure, supply and install

Site visit

We measure the opening, check the wall, floor and lintel, and help you choose the door type and finish.

Written quote

The door, finish, hardware and installation are set out in writing before any work starts.

Supply

The door is made or cut to your measurements.

Install and adjust

We fix the track level, hang the panels and adjust them until the door folds smoothly and closes neatly.

See our door installation service and finished projects in our work.

Cleaning and care

Clean

Wipe with a soft cloth, warm water and mild soap. Avoid solvents and abrasive pads, which dull the surface.

Track

Vacuum the track and wipe it now and then, more often after a dusty or sandy day.

Hinges and rollers

If the door starts to drag or squeak, a silicone spray on the rollers usually fixes it. Avoid oil, which collects dust.

Adjustment

If a panel drops or the latch stops catching, have the track and rollers adjusted before parts wear.

Where PVC folding doors fit, and where they do not

PVC is the right material for a particular job: light, water-tolerant separation indoors. It is the wrong material for an external opening in Dubai sun, and we will say so rather than sell you one.

PVC folding doors: FAQs

What are PVC folding doors?

PVC folding doors are doors made of polyvinyl chloride panels hinged together so they fold into a compact stack when opened. Most hang from a top track and are used inside the home for kitchens, bathrooms, laundries, stores and room dividers.

Are PVC folding doors good for bathrooms?

Yes. PVC does not swell, rot or rust, so it copes well with steam and splashes. A folding door is also useful in small bathrooms where a swing door would hit the basin or WC. Choose solid or frosted panels and a lockable handle.

Can PVC folding doors be used outside?

Light PVC accordion and panel doors are for inside use only. For a covered outdoor area, a reinforced uPVC bifold door can work, but for an opening in direct sun, wind and rain, an aluminium bifold door is the better choice.

What is the difference between PVC and uPVC folding doors?

PVC accordion and panel doors use flexible or lightweight PVC and are made for internal openings. uPVC is rigid, unplasticised PVC used for glazed bifold door frames, usually with steel reinforcement, and it is stronger and more weather-resistant.

Do PVC folding doors survive the Dubai heat?

Inside air-conditioned homes and in shaded areas they perform well. PVC left in direct sun can fade or move with heat unless it is UV-stabilised, so choose light colours and keep PVC out of full sun, or use aluminium for sun-facing openings.

PVC or aluminium folding doors: which is better?

PVC is lighter, easy to clean and usually costs less, which suits kitchens, bathrooms, laundries and stores. Aluminium is stronger, has slimmer frames, handles sun and weather better and suits living rooms, terraces and gardens.

How much do PVC folding doors cost in Dubai?

The price depends on the width and height of the opening, the door type, the finish, any glass inserts and the hardware. PVC is usually one of the most affordable folding door options. We quote every door after a free site visit.

Are PVC folding doors soundproof?

No. They reduce noise and block the view, but light PVC doors do not soundproof a room. For better sound control, choose a solid door or a glazed system with seals.

Can a PVC folding door be locked?

Yes. They can have a simple latch or a lockable handle, which is useful for bathrooms and stores. They are not security doors, so they are not designed for external entrances.

How do I clean a PVC folding door?

Wipe it with a soft cloth, warm water and mild soap. Avoid solvents and abrasive pads, vacuum the track now and then, and use a little silicone spray on the rollers if the door starts to drag.

What colours do PVC folding doors come in?

They come in white, light colours and wood-effect finishes. Lighter colours are the better choice in Dubai because they absorb less heat. We show the available finishes at the site visit.

Do you install PVC folding doors outside Dubai?

Yes. We also install across the UAE, including Abu Dhabi and Sharjah.
