Why aluminium is the right frame for a bifold door

A bifold door is a row of glass panels hinged together that fold and stack to one side, opening most of the wall. Every panel hangs on its hinges and rollers, so the frame has to stay straight under the weight of the glass for years.

That is why aluminium is the standard material for bifold doors in Dubai. It is stiff enough to carry large, heavy double-glazed panels on slim frames. It doesn't rot or swell with humidity, and powder coating protects it from sun and salt air. uPVC frames are cheaper, but they need wider profiles and internal reinforcement to carry the same glass. Timber looks warm, but it moves with heat and humidity and needs regular refinishing.

This page covers our aluminium folding doors in detail: systems, prices, sizes, glass and installation. For an overview of every folding door we make, see our sliding folding doors in Dubai.

Standard or heavy-duty?

Most villa and apartment openings of normal height use a standard system. Very tall panels, heavy glass such as thick double glazing or laminated units, and doors used many times a day (for example in a café) need heavy-duty profiles and running gear. We confirm which one your opening needs at the site visit, before you order.

What the German hardware does

The hardware is the part of a bifold that moves: hinges, rollers, locks and handles. With good hardware, a set of panels glides with one hand and locks at several points along the frame. Worn or cheap rollers are the most common reason a bifold starts to drag. That's why we fit Roto, Siegenia and GU hardware and adjust every panel before handover.

How to compare bifold door quotes

Two quotes for "a 5-panel door" can describe very different doors. Before you compare prices, check that each quote lists:

The system

The aluminium system brand, and whether the profiles are thermally broken.

The glass

Single or double glazed, the thickness of each pane, and any Low-E or laminated layer.

The hardware

The brand of hinges, rollers and locks, and the number of locking points.

The terms

Installation included, threshold type, colour, lead time and the written warranty.

A lower price usually means lighter profiles, single glazing or unbranded rollers. Your quote from us lists every one of these items. Comparing folding doors with a lighter accordion door? Our accordion vs bifold doors cost comparison explains the gap.

Bifold door sizes, panels and layouts

The width of your opening decides how many panels you need. The layout decides where those panels go when the door is open.

Panel layouts

Layouts are written as panels to the left + panels to the right. A 3+0 door folds all three panels to one side. A 2+2 door splits to both sides. An odd number of panels, such as 3, 5 or 7, leaves one panel free to open as a traffic door.

The folded stack

When open, the panels stand side by side at the end of the track. The stack sticks out into the room, or the garden, by about one panel width. Keep that area free of furniture, planters and pool edges.

Inward or outward

Outward-opening doors keep the stack outside and are the usual choice onto a garden. Inward-opening doors suit balconies and narrow terraces with little space outside.

Large openings: 6 to 10 panels

For openings over about 5 metres, the door is usually split so the panels stack on both sides. A 6-panel door as 3+3, or an 8-panel door as 4+4, keeps each stack manageable. Openings over about 7 metres can take 8 to 10 panels. At that size, the lintel must carry the load without bending, so we check the structure before specifying a 10-panel door.

Corner bifold doors

Two sets of bifold doors can meet at a corner and open two sides of a room to the garden. Whether the corner can be left without a post depends on the system and the structure above it, which we confirm on site.

Bifold windows for kitchens

The same aluminium system can be made as a folding window above a kitchen worktop. When it's folded open, the counter becomes a serving bar to a terrace or barbecue area. A kitchen bifold window also pairs well with bifold doors in the living room.

For small openings, our guide to 3 panel folding doors shows the space calculations in detail.

Glass options for folding glass doors

Glass is most of the surface of folding glass doors, so it decides how hot the room gets and how private it feels. Every panel we fit uses toughened safety glass.

For doors that face the sun, double glazing with a Low-E coating is the most effective upgrade. The coating reflects much of the sun's heat while still letting daylight through. It matters most on west- and south-facing openings.

GlassWhat it doesBest for
Single toughenedSafety glass that breaks into small blunt piecesInternal and fully covered openings
Double glazed, e.g. 6-12-6 mmTwo panes with a sealed gap that slows heat and noiseExternal doors to gardens, pools and terraces

LaminatedA bonded layer holds the glass together if it breaksGround floors, security and noise
TintedCuts glare and brightnessOpenings with strong direct sun
Frosted or flutedLets light in, blocks the viewPrivacy from neighbours or the street
Smart glassSwitches from frosted to clear at a buttonPrivacy only when you need it

Double-glazed and laminated panels are heavier, which is one reason the running gear has to match the glass. For switchable privacy, see our smart glass.

External bifold doors for Dubai villas

A door between an air-conditioned room and a Dubai garden works hard: summer heat, sand, humidity near the coast and the occasional heavy rain. These are the points we specify for every external bifold.

Thermal break

An insulating strip inside the aluminium frame slows heat moving from the hot outer frame to the inside. It helps keep the room cooler and reduces condensation on the frame.

Weather threshold

A raised threshold with drainage stops wind-driven rain and sand at the bottom track. Flush thresholds look seamless but suit covered openings best.

Sand and dust

Brush seals and EPDM gaskets keep most dust out, and a track that is easy to vacuum keeps the rollers running after a shamal.

Coastal areas

Powder-coated frames and corrosion-resistant fixings suit homes near the sea, such as the Palm, Marina and Jumeirah.

Poolside and garden doors

Outward-opening doors keep the stack out of the living room. Make sure the stack will not land on the pool edge, a step or a planter. Toughened safety glass is standard on every panel, and laminated glass adds security on ground floors.

Apartments and high floors

On a balcony, inward-opening doors keep the stack off the balcony floor. Wind is stronger on high floors, and most towers need building management approval before an external door is changed. Check this first, and we will confirm that the system suits the height and exposure.

Keeping a room with bifold doors cool

A wall of glass lets in light and views, and in Dubai it can also let in heat. Heat gets through a bifold door in three ways, and each one has its own fix.

Through the glass

Glass is most of the door, so it lets in the most heat. Double glazing slows heat moving through, and a Low-E or solar-control coating reflects much of the sun's warmth before it reaches the room. Tinted glass also cuts glare on bright afternoons.

Through the frame

Aluminium conducts heat well. Without a thermal break, the inside of the frame warms up with the outside. A thermally broken profile keeps the two halves apart, so the inner frame stays closer to room temperature.

Through gaps

Hot, dusty air leaks through poor seals. EPDM gaskets, brush seals, multi-point locks that pull the panels tight, and careful adjustment at installation keep a closed door sealed.

Shade makes the biggest difference

The best glass works even better in shade. A roof overhang, a pergola or external blinds stop direct sun from hitting the door in the first place. That's why west-facing terraces with bifold doors are often paired with shading. When we survey an opening, we note which way it faces, and we recommend the glass to match.

Colours and finishes

Frames are powder coated, which gives a hard, even finish that resists fading in strong sun.

  • Matt black and dark grey: a popular choice for modern Dubai villas, framing the view like a picture.
  • White and light tones: blend into white walls and suit classic or Mediterranean-style homes.
  • Any RAL colour: to match windows, railings or pergolas.
  • Dual colour: one colour outside and another inside, for example black outside and white inside. See dual-colour aluminium.

Handles can be matched to the frame colour.

Where aluminium bifold doors work best

Bifolds make sense where you want the whole wall open, not just a door-sized gap.

  • Villa living rooms: open the lounge to the garden or pool and use both as one space in the cooler months.
  • Dining rooms and kitchens: connect the table or kitchen to an outdoor barbecue area, with a bifold window over the counter.
  • Terraces and roof decks: turn a closed room into a covered outdoor room.
  • Balconies: inward-opening doors for apartments and penthouses, subject to building approval.
  • Inside the home: glass folding doors between living, dining and study areas. See internal folding doors.
  • Restaurants and shops: heavier systems built for daily use. See commercial folding doors.

Aluminium bifold doors: FAQs

How much do aluminium bifold doors cost in Dubai?

Aluminium bifold doors are priced per panel. Our standard-height doors cost about AED 2,500–3,500 per panel, supplied and installed, so a 3-panel door is about AED 7,500–10,500 and a 5-panel door about AED 12,500–17,500. Tall, heavy-duty and motorised doors are quoted per project after a site visit.

What is included in your bifold door price?

The site visit and measurement, the aluminium frame made to size, toughened safety glass, hinges, rollers, locks and handles, delivery, installation, sealing, adjustment and a 10-year warranty. Everything is listed on your written quote.

Why choose aluminium over uPVC for bifold doors?

Aluminium is much stiffer, so it carries large and heavy double-glazed panels on slim frames without sagging. uPVC needs wider frames and internal reinforcement, and it is more affected by strong sun and heat.

What is a thermal break and do I need one?

A thermal break is an insulating strip inside the aluminium frame that slows heat passing from the hot outer frame to the inner frame. We recommend it for every external bifold door in Dubai. Internal and fully covered doors can do without it.

Which glass is best for folding glass doors in Dubai?

For doors facing the garden, pool or street, double glazing with a Low-E coating gives the best balance of daylight and heat control. Laminated glass adds security and noise reduction, and frosted, fluted or smart glass adds privacy. All our panels use toughened safety glass.

How wide can an aluminium bifold door be?

Openings of 7 metres and more are possible with 8 to 10 panels, usually split to stack on both sides. The practical limit depends on the system, the panel height and whether the lintel can carry the load, which we check at the site visit.

How much space do the folded panels need?

When fully open, the panels stand side by side at the end of the track and stick out about one panel width into the room or garden. Plan that area free of furniture, planters and pool edges.

Top-hung or bottom-rolling: which is better?

Top-hung doors hang from the head track, so the bottom track can be low or flush, but the lintel must be strong enough. Bottom-rolling doors carry their weight on the floor track and suit heavy external doors or weaker lintels. We choose after checking the structure.

Do aluminium bifold doors keep out rain and sand?

Yes, when they have the right threshold and seals. External doors use a raised weather threshold with drainage, EPDM gaskets and brush seals. Flush thresholds look seamless but are best under a covered terrace. The track should still be vacuumed after dusty days.

Are aluminium bifold doors secure?

Yes. The panels interlock when closed and lock at several points with multi-point locks, and the traffic door has its own lockable handle. Laminated glass can be added for extra security on ground floors.

Can I have aluminium bifold doors on an apartment balcony?

Usually yes, once your building management approves the change. Inward-opening doors keep the folded stack off the balcony, and we confirm the system suits the height and wind exposure of your floor.

Can you make a bifold window for my kitchen?

Yes. The same aluminium system can be made as a folding window over a kitchen worktop, turning the counter into a serving bar to a terrace or barbecue area.

What colours are available?

Frames are powder coated in RAL colours. Matt black, dark grey and white are the most popular, and dual-colour frames with a different colour inside and outside are available.

How long does it take from order to installation?

After the site visit and your order, manufacturing usually takes about 2–3 weeks, and installation usually takes 1–2 days depending on the size and number of doors.

What warranty do your aluminium bifold doors have?

Our aluminium bifold door systems come with a 10-year warranty. The exact terms are written on your quote.

Can bifold doors be motorised?

Yes, motorised operation is available and is quoted per project. For garages, see our automatic bifold garage doors.
